Photography as a Means of Communication
This course is composed of a series of lectures, workshops and adventurous outings in and around Siena, which deal with the subject of photography as a means of personal communication, both on a creative or expressive level, as well as a technical one.
In various experimental workshops, this course aims to unlock the imagination and expand the students' creative potential using the medium of photography. We will be using the camera to explore image making and the creative process it involves, with emphasis on the reasoning behind taking a photograph - on the quality of the narrative - rather than solely on photography as a technique. With this focus in mind, cameras, equipment and materials at the weekly workshops will be basic and easy to work with, and students will be expected to use their time, both in and out of class, to develop their own ideas and style. The course will embrace both colour and black and white photography. There are dark room facilities for black and white developing, printing and experimenting.
Students do not need to have prior knowledge of photographic techniques or use of equipment. An open mind and a sense of creative spirit and adventure are essential for this course, and any studying of images, photographic or otherwise, is recommended.
Students are asked to bring with them an SLR35 mm camera, with manual options.
