A New Vision from the Past: Italian Sculpture and the Classical Heritage

From the Middle Ages up to the present day, the rediscovery of the classical tradition and the influence of models from antiquity have been central to the history of Italian art. In this course we will evaluate the importance to the development of sculpture in Italy of its Graeco-Roman heritage. We will study the evidence of classical technique and style in Italian sculpture from the time of its rebirth in Tuscany (particularly in Siena and Pisa) in the mid-13th century, through the Renaissance and Baroque periods, to the Romantic period of the 19th century; from Nicola Pisano, through Donatello and Michelangelo, to Bernini and the Neoclassical Canova.
